Excursions in Olkhon Island

Description

The tour begins in Irkutsk at 6-7 am. The road to Olkhon takes 2.5 hours by asphalt road, then 20 minutes by ferry, and voila, we are in Olkhon Island. Then we need to go 40 minutes more by off-road (4WDcar) to the capital of the Island, to Khuzhir village.
During 2.5 hours of asphalt road to Olkhon we will see endless steppes, impenetrable forests, salt lakes, Tazheran steppes, and we will meet following settlements and sights:
1) Ust-Orda village with its famous monument “Gesser” – Buryat hero
2) Bayandai village is a typical Buryat village
3) The border of the Olkhon region (we will stop there to “poburhanit”, that means  pay tribute to the spirits of this land)
4) Elantsy village is the capital of the Olkhon region. If someone is hungry, we will stop here and eat in a Buryat cafe.
5) Sakhurta is the extreme mainland village. Here we will take a ferry and swim to the other side.

On the other shore, we will be expected by a special “Olkhon” off-road vehicle – UAZ “Bukhanka”. On the way to Khuzhir, we will stop s in a sacred place, where we make “burhanit”, because now we are in a new land. In Buryat language “burhanit”  means to honor the local spirits to protect us from adversity during our trip. Usually people “burhanit” with silver coins, rice, matches and cigarettes. Next, we will stop in Khuzhir, where we will see the famous Shamanka rock and “Sergea” pillars.
After Khuzhir we will begin our excursion to Cape Khoboy – the most northern point of Olkhon, where you will see open Baikal. Khoboy translates as a fang of the beast from Buryat language. On the way to Cape Khoboy we will have 5 stops:
1) Kharantsy village, where we will see the local Lion and Crocodile. After Kharantsy  the territory of the national park begins. 
2) Land “Sandy”, with abandoned barracks for prisoners.
3) Cape “Three Brothers”
4) Cape Khoboy. During the stop at Cape Khoboy, our driver will prepare for us a lunch from fresh omul. 
5) Cape Shuntai or Cape of Love, where we can make wishes by throwing a stone in the open Baikal.
6) Meteorological station “Uzury”, where only one family lives and they also work at this station and measure the air temperature and earthquakes.

After excursion to Cape Khoboy we have to go back to Irkutsk.

  • Price of excursion:
    1 person – 29000 rub.

N.B. From the 15th of June till the 1st of September this tour requires extra transfer because of long lines to the ferry. 
From 25th of December till the 5th of February and from the 1st of April till the 1st of May this tour requires extra transfer because of ice freezing and melting period. 
This extra transfer costs 10000 RUR per group (round trip).

Breakfast. Today we will have a long road to Irkutsk (about 5 hours). Departure at 10 a.m. Lunch on the way (extra charge). On the way back, you can see the 3 types of terrain: rocks, forests and steppes. Arrival in Irkutsk at 3 pm.
Additionally you can order excursion around the Southern part of Olkhon Island with visiting Ogoy Island, ice bubbles, Cape Khorgoy and ice caves and grottes.

Day 3.
Breakfast. Today we will have boat excursion along the Small Sea. Departure at 10 a.m. Firstly you will visit Shamanka Rock from other side, so you will see Dragon Picture. Then you will go to see seals in Zamogoy Island. So you can see seals from 50m distance. 
After you will go to Ogoy Island to see Buddhist Stupa of Enlightenment. Later you will go to mainland to visit and taste sacred springs. There you can have lunch inlocal cafe or you can take food with you. 
After lunch you will visit one more Island – Elenka Island. And then you you will go back to Khuzhir village.
Arrival in Khuzhir at 3-4 pm. Free time. Overnight in the guest house.
